Stires Earns First Win as Mustangs Beat Simpson in Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Four Mustangs scored in double figures as the Cal Poly women's basketball team secured an 81-49 win in its home opener over Simpson Thursday morning inside Mott Athletics Center.
For first year head coach Shanele Stires, the win is the first of her career as a Division I head coach.
In front of over 1,700 fans, made up mostly of local elementary school children as part of 'Field Trip Day', graduate transfer guard Nikola Kovacikova, junior guard Taylor Wu, junior forward Natalia Ackerman, and senior forward Julia Nielacna all each finished with 12 points to pace the Mustangs (1-1). Kovacikova also added six rebounds and four assists while Ackerman led the way in rebounding with seven.
As a team, Cal Poly shot 59 percent from the field, including 67 percent in the second half. The Red Hawks (2-1), an NAIA school based in Redding, Calif., shot 33 percent for the game and had two players score in double figures.
The Mustangs made their first five shots of the game, storming out to a 12-4 lead. After leading by 10 after the first quarter, Simpson cut it to seven to begin the second after making a three on its first possession. Cal Poly increased its lead to as much as 14 in the second quarter and led 38-26 at halftime.
Sparked by a 15-3 run to open the second half, Cal Poly pushed its lead up to 53-29 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. From that point, Simpson never got closer than within 18 as the Mustangs led by as much as 34 with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Cal Poly will go back on the road next for a pair of games. The Mustangs will take on the 2021 national champions in Stanford Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. followed by a trip to Fresno State Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
