Six in Double Figures as Mustangs Top UC Santa Cruz in Exhibition

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Six Mustangs scored in double figures as the Cal Poly women's basketball team beat UC Santa Cruz 90-48 Friday at Mott Athletics Center in its final game before the regular season begins next week.

Fellow sophomore guard Jazzy Anousinh finished with 13 points as well as five assists. In her first game as a Mustang, junior guard Taylor Wu also had 13 points on 5-8 shooting. As a team, Cal Poly had 18 more points off turnovers and 36 more points in the paint. The Mustangs, who never trailed and held the lead for over 39 minutes, shot 60 percent from the field and 43 percent from three, making nine. They were also 11-12 from the free throw line. In the first quarter, Cal Poly outscored the Banana Slugs 27-11 while shooting over 68 percent from the field. They then held UC Santa Cruz to 11 points in the second quarter to take a 44-22 lead into halftime. Cal Poly opened the second half with a 15-4 run to stretch its lead 33. Sparked by shooting 10-15 in the third, the Mustangs took a 70-39 lead into the fourth quarter. Cal Poly put the defensive clamps on UC Santa Cruz in the fourth as the Banana Slugs were only able to score nine points in the quarter as the Mustangs finished the game on an 8-0 run to complete the 90-48 win, their largest lead. The Mustangs open the regular season Monday, Nov. 7 on the road at UCLA. Tip time from Pauley Pavilion is set for 5:30 p.m. with the game streaming live on PAC-12.com.
