This story has been updated with diving results from the invitational.
ST. GEORGE, Utah — A third-place finish by senior Brian Wong in the 200-yard butterfly and senior Max Powell breaking his own school record in the 1-meter dive highlighted action for Cal Poly swimming during the final day of the Utah Tech Trailblazer Invitational on Saturday.
A time of 1:49.21 allowed Wong to secure third in the 200 fly to lead the Mustang men, who captured third out of the five teams at the invitational with 574.5 points.
Cal Poly was the only school that competed in the diving portion of the invitational and Powell put on quite the show. He added to his own school record in the 1-meter dive for the second time this season with a score of 369.90. Powell broke the program record for the first time in a dual meet at UC Santa Cruz on Jan. 15, 2022, and added to it at a meet in Bakersfield earlier this season. His previous best 1-meter dive mark was 364.30.
Powell swept the men's 1-meter and 3-meter dives, while freshman Cole Underwood captured second in both events. On the women's side, freshman Myl Lauc won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
Senior Ryan Iannaccone had an impressive performance in the 100 freestyle, earning fourth with a time of 44.92 seconds.
Junior transfer Ryan Trichler grabbed seventh in the 200 fly, junior Sean Keegan placed seventh in the 200 backstroke and freshman Cole Groom took ninth in the 1650 free.
Iannaccone, Keegan, and freshmen Nicky Glenn and Andrew Sullivan carried the men's 400 free relay team to a fifth-place finish.
On the women's side, senior Kaia Anderson secured eighth in the 1650 free and sophomore Taylor Lyon brought home ninth in the 200 fly.
As a team, the Cal Poly women placed eighth out of 11 schools, finishing ahead of University of the Pacific, Pepperdine and BYU.
A handful of Mustangs will compete in the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals on Dec. 7-10, before the full team returns to action Dec. 17-19 for the UNLV Invitational.
