Dvoracek, Markovska Help Cal Poly to Four-Set Win Over CSU Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by double-digit kills from both senior opposite hitter Maia Dvoracek and redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska, Cal Poly took down visiting CSU Bakersfield 3-1 (25-11, 25-21, 11-25, 25-23) Tuesday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
Dvoracek recorded her seventh consecutive double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 13 digs to go along with four aces. Markovska finished with 12 kills, nine digs, and two aces. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham added nine kills and six digs. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis dished out 41 assists to go along with six digs and three kills. Freshman libero London Haberfield led the back row defense with a team-high 14 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (16-11, 13-4 BW) had 10 aces from behind the service line. The Roadrunners (7-22, 4-13 BW) were strong at the net, finishing with 15 blocks led by Emma Erteltova's 11.
Cal Poly was dominant in the first set, hitting .320 while holding CSU Bakersfield to a -.115 hitting percentage. Tied 6-6, the Mustangs went on a 13-2 run to pull away 19-8. After the Roadrunners scored to make it 20-11, Cal Poly finished the set scoring five straight points to win it 25-11. It matched the fewest points they've held to an opponent to in a set this season since holding UC Davis to 11 points in the first set Oct. 8.
Tied 7-7 in the second set, CSU Bakersfield scored four straight before a 10-2 Cal Poly run gave the Mustangs a 17-13 lead. After Cal Poly took a 20-17 lead, the Roadrunners tied it by scoring three consecutive points. The Mustangs then finished the set on a 5-1 run to win it 25-21.
Things turned in the third set in favor of CSU Bakersfield. Tied at 4 apiece, the Roadrunners went on a 14-1 run to pull away for good. From there, the Mustangs never got closer than within 12 as CSU Bakersfield won the set 25-11.
The fourth set was tight start to finish with 16 ties and four lead changes. Neither team ever held more than a two point lead the entire set. After CSU Bakersfield tied it at 23 apiece, a kill by Stockham followed up by an ace from senior Avalon DeNecochea finished of the win for the Mustangs, 25-23.
Cal Poly will now get ready for a tough test when traveling across the Pacific to take on first-place Hawai'i Friday in Honolulu at 9 p.m. PT in a must-win match.
