
Five Mustangs Receive Academic All-District Honors

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Five student-athletes on the Cal Poly women's soccer team earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.
Peja Balanon, Emma Brown, Madison Demijohn, Annette Greenley and Camille Lafaix were all recognized for their performance and dedication in the classroom and on the pitch. All five advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot with honorees set to be announced on Dec. 6.
The Academic All-District Women's Soccer Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes and to qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 GPA, have a minimum of one year completed at their current institution and be a starter or key reserve player, athletically.
In her final season, Lafaix led the Mustangs in points (11), goals (five) and game-winners (three) en route to becoming the first athlete to receive back-to-back Big West Midfielder of the Year honors. She grabbed her second All-Big West first team selection and prior to the season was named to the Preseason MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, the first player in program history to garner the distinction.
Lafaix, who finishes her Cal Poly career with the 15th-most points in program history (42), will graduate this winter with a bachelor's degree in psychology and plans on pursuing a professional soccer career. She was named to The Big West All-Academic Team in 2021.
As a senior, Demijohn buried her first collegiate goal in a road defeat at Stanford on Sept. 4. She found the back of the net for the second time in 2022 less than two minutes into a 1-1 draw with Long Beach State on Oct. 20. She also assisted on Lafaix's game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine on Oct. 23.
Demijohn, a two-time Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll selection, is currently pursuing a bachelor's in Kinesiology and plans on working as an EMT for a year after college before pursuing a career as a physician's assistant. She wants to start a non-profit to help fund research to find a cure for ALS.
Greenley, named to The Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll and The Big West All-Academic Team in 2021, started in two matches this fall and made reserve appearances in 11 others.
Greenley, who earned her first collegiate assist in a 5-0 home win over San Jose State on Sept. 12, 2021, will graduate this winter with a bachelor's degree in business administration. In the future, she wants to pursue a career in social justice or work for a non-profit.
Balanon burst on the scene as a sophomore, burying her first career goal and brace in a dominant 4-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 15. She secured her first collegiate assist in a win at CSUN on Oct. 2, and finished the year with three goals (tied for the third-most on the team) and two assists. Balanon is majoring in biological sciences.
Brown, a Kinesiology major, grabbed All-Big West first team honors this after leading the team in minutes (1,705) and only stepping off the pitch for five minutes all season. She anchored a Cal Poly defense that posted 10 shutouts, including seven in conference play. As a freshman, she received Big West All-Freshman praise and earned a United Soccer Coaches All-West Region second team selection.
