Cal Poly Unveils New Donor-Funded Beach House Facility at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It was another landmark day for the Cal Poly beach volleyball program Tuesday as the brand new, donor-funded Beach House was unveiled in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Beach House at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex will provide the student-athletes with their own home where they can study, watch film to prepare for upcoming matches, fueling and nutrition station, and a place to hang out and bond as a team. Exterior upgrades include having a roll-up store front garage door that will open or look out onto the courts and will have overhanging awnings to keep the space cool from the sun. Additionally, it will provide head and assistant coach offices. Previously, the program shared space with the indoor volleyball program.
The donor-funded project, which was generously funded by Bill and Cheryl Swanson, provides the program with needed space adjacent to the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
"After watching our team compete against the best in the country, with their logo tents up on the sidelines, Cheryl and I realized that our Mustangs didn't have their own space at the complex," Bill Swanson said. "After the completion of the Mustang Golf Academy and seeing how the golf student-athletes use their clubhouse area to create a cohesive team, we knew it was critical to add this component to the beach facility to ensure the program continues to have a best-in-class facility.
"Cheryl and I are pleased to provide funding for the Beach House and look forward to following the program as it continues to compete for national championships," Swanson added. "Our student-athletes deserve the best!"
For head coach Todd Rogers, the space is a welcomed new addition that will be very beneficial for the entire program and help in continuing to elevate it to be one of the best programs in the nation.
"What an amazing setup for our beach team with our new Beach House right next to the best beach volleyball complex in the country," Rogers said. "We were blessed to be able to share offices with the indoor volleyball squad and I am very thankful to the indoor team and Coach Walters and her staff for being great Poly teammates for the past several years, but it really is special for our team and staff to now have a place to truly call home. Thank you to Bill and Cheryl Swanson for driving the idea of converting the old golf offices into the Beach House and making it a reality for the beach gals! We are really looking forward to hosting this upcoming spring and being able to hang out in our new digs during the best beach volleyball competition in the country, the COE Challenge."
The players on the team are equally as excited and grateful for the new facility and will improve the daily quality of life for them on campus.
"I am so grateful to benefit from the continuous growth of our beach volleyball program," senior Delaney Peranich said. "A pivotal piece of that continual growth is having an office and team room of our own. I could see this space being used for shared meals, team meetings, reviewing film, pre-game rituals, hanging out, and so much more. But most importantly, the Beach House will act as a home base. Having this space specifically for our team will, no doubt, deepen the community and camaraderie within our program."
"It has been really cool to be a part of this program while it has been evolving," senior Kalee Graff said. "I know that the Beach House is the final missing piece that will make my teammates, myself, and all incoming players feel like beach volleyball has always belonged in Cal Poly Athletics. I am looking forward to having a private space on campus and it will for sure make my life more convenient."
"When I toured Cal Poly five years ago, the program didn't have a home space on campus and the coaches had a small office to share," said graduate student Mariah Whalen. "The transformation of this program and its facilities has been amazing, largely due to the support system that we have. The Beach House is not only giving us a hangout space, but a distraction-free space to get our stuff done. I'm excited to see the impact that it has on the team during the competition season when we can pop open the garage door on tournament weekends and have a spot for everyone to hang out and recover in."
There will be four home events this season at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex for fans to come support the team, with the first one in March and the flagship event, The Center of Effort Beach Volleyball Challenge on April 14 and 15, 2023, welcoming eight of the best beach volleyball programs from across the country.
