SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After becoming the first Mustang to qualify for the NCAA XC Championships since 2018, graduate student Jake Ritter has been named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
An impressive 12th-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals on Friday in University Place, Wash., allowed Ritter to earn All-West Region honors and secure an individual berth to the national meet when the complete field was announced Saturday.
Ritter ran a personal-best 10K time of 28:43.3 and will take the stage at Oklahoma State's Greiner Family Cross Country Course on Saturday, Nov. 19, by being one of the top four finishers at the West Regional who did not belong to an automatic qualifying team or an at-large team.
Ritter is the highest individual finisher at regionals for Cal Poly since Swarnjit Boyal (10th) in 2017.
The Citrus Heights native, who medically redshirted a few events into last season due to injury, broke the men's conference meet record just over two weeks ago to grab his record third Big West individual title.
Ritter, a three-time Big West Men's Athlete of the Year, will compete in the men's 10K at the NCAA Championships in Stillwater at 8:10 a.m. PST Saturday. The event will be televised on ESPNU.
