Dvoracek Double-Double Leads Mustangs to Sweep Over UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Senior opposite hitter Maia Dvoracek recorded her sixth straight double-double as the Cal Poly volleyball team put on a dominant road performance Saturday, sweeping UC Riverside 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-23).
Dvoracek led the way with a team-high 13 kills with just one attack error on 25 swings to hit .480 to go along with 12 digs and four aces. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska finished with eight kills and 10 digs while senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added seven kills. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis dished out 36 assists while freshman libero London Haberfield led the way in digs with a match-high 13.
As a team, the Mustangs had their most efficient offensive performance of the year, hitting a season-high .408 while limiting the Highlanders (4-21, 2-14) to a .126 hitting percentage.
Cal Poly was dominant in the first set, hitting .520 while holding UC Riverside to -.036. The Highlanders took a 4-3 lead before the Mustangs scored five straight points to take an 8-4 advantage. Up 10-6, the Mustangs pulled away with a 12-2 run to go ahead 22-9 before going on to win the set 25-12.
The Mustangs never trailed in the second set, getting out to a 5-1 lead to begin the set. Leading 10-6, Cal Poly went on a 10-2 run to take its largest lead at 20-9 and went on to win 25-15.
It was a much tighter third set with six ties and two lead changes. With UC Riverside leading 9-7, the Highlanders scored three straight points to go up by five, their largest lead of the match. After UC Riverside took a 15-10 lead, the Mustangs rattled off three points in a row to cut the lead to two. The Highlanders eventually pushed their lead back up to four at 21-17 before a 5-1 Cal Poly run tied the score at 22 apiece. A service error by the Mustangs on the next point gave UC Riverside a 23-22 lead. Cal Poly then scored the next three points, two via kills by redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham, to win the set 25-23 and complete the sweep.
The Mustangs, who sit in in third place in the Big West standings two games behind UCSB and three behind Hawai'i, have a quick turnaround as they will host CSU Bakersfield at Mott Athletics Center Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
