CARMEL BY THE SEA, Calif. -- Ohio State overtook Northwestern over the final nine holes and Owen Avrit of Oregon and Adam Wallin of Ohio State shared medalist honors in the inaugural Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve on Tuesday.
Ohio State trailed Northwestern by eight strokes entering the final round and carded a four-person even-par 288 total on the 7,048-yard, par-72 course located in the hills several miles southeast of Carmel. The Buckeyes defeated Northwestern, which finished with a 299 total Tuesday, 845-848.
Avrit carded a final-round 70 and Wallin a 69 as both finished with 10-under-par 206 totals, two shots ahead of third-place Nicolas Evangelio of Marquette.
Cal Poly sophomore Jackson Parrish checked in with a 76 Tuesday for a two-under-par 214 total, tied for 13th place with six other golfers.
Austin Liu and Joey Zambri were the next Mustangs on the leaderboard with 222 totals. Liu carded a 76 and Zambri a 73 as each finished tied for 46th place.
Baron Szeto had an 81 for a 237 total and 70th place while Ross Laird was 72nd with an 83 for a 242 aggregate.
Competing as individuals, Cal Poly's Ben Quick finished 55th with a 2225 total after a final-round 80, Parker Mapes was 58th with a 226 total following a 76 and Drew Kim was 65th after his 76 for a 229 total.
Parrish finished fifth in par-4 scoring at one under par while Quick was sixth in par-5 scoring at seven under par. Parrish's 15 birdies over 54 holes was No. 4 in the field.
The tournament concludes the fall portion of Cal Poly's 2022-23 schedule. The Mustangs return to the course Jan. 30-31 at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
