Shively Named Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's Xian Shively has been named the Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Shively earned the award after capturing 25th in the Joe Piane Invitational Blue race Friday to lead the Mustang men to a seventh-place finish in a field filled with ranked teams.
The redshirt junior ran a 5-mile time of 23:54.0 in his season debut for Cal Poly. This is the first time the Glendale, Calif. native has won the award. He is the second Mustang to receive the honor this season after sophomore Aidan McCarthy grabbed the award on Sept. 20.
Last year, Shively finished eighth at the 2021 Big West Cross Country Championships to garner All-Conference praise. He secured more All-Big West praise on the track this spring when he placed second in the 1,500-meter at the conference championships.
Shively was one of three Mustangs that finished inside the top 30 individually for the men at the Joe Piane Invitational, joining Jake Ritter (27th) and McCarthy (28th).
