Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Tony Ruiz

SAN LUIS OBISPO – With his first two Division I goals contributing to the Cal Poly men's soccer program's undefeated Big West Conference start, junior midfielder Tony Ruiz was named Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday morning.
Ruiz, an offseason transfer from two-year Hartnell College, scored his first goal as a Mustang at UC Davis (Sept. 28), handing Cal Poly a 23rd-minute lead after the Aggies failed to clear an errant ball in the penalty area. The Big West Conference opener, however, ended in a 1-1 draw after UC Davis equalized in the 78th.
Four days later, Ruiz followed freshman forward Conner Lisenbee's 24th-minute opening goal with his own strike in the 33rd as the Mustangs overturned an early deficit at home versus UC Irvine to prevail, 2-1.
With Sunday's victory – Cal Poly's first against UC Irvine seven seasons – the Mustangs rose to second place in the Big West table. On four points, Cal Poly trails Big West leader UC Santa Barbara by two points and leads six programs with three points.
Cal Poly resumes Big West action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff from Titan Stadium is 7 p.m.
