Balanced Attack Leads Mustangs to Road Sweep of UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Five Mustangs had six or more kills to help lead a balanced offensive attack as Cal Poly swept UC San Diego Friday 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) in La Jolla to earn its sixth straight win and remain tied atop the Big West standings.Maia Dvoracek led all players with 12 kills while hitting .476 to go along with three blocks, four digs, and a pair of service aces. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham finished with nine kills and five digs while redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska also had nine kills, four blocks and four digs.
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack added eight kills while hitting a career-high .889 to go along with four blocks. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips put down six kills as well as four blocks. Redshirt sophomore libero Jolei Akima led the back row defensive effort for Cal Poly, leading the way with 17 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (11-8, 8-1) out-blocked the Tritons (9-12, 2-7) 10 to seven while also hitting .296 for the match compared to UCSD's .117.
To start the first set, the Tritons got out to a 6-2 lead before a 5-1 run by Cal Poly tied it. Tied at 11 apiece, another 5-1 run by the Mustangs gave them a 16-12 lead. Later with Cal Poly ahead 20-16, UCSD went on a 6-2 run to tie it at 22-22. From there, the Mustangs rattled off three points in a row, capped off by a block from Phillips and Markovska to win it 25-22.
Tied 13-13 in the second after a back-and-forth start to the set, the Tritons scored three straight points before Cal Poly answered with a 5-1 run to take the lead back at 18-17. After UCSD scored back-to-back points to take a 19-18 lead, the Mustangs scored the next seven points to end the set and win it 25-19.
In the third set with the Mustangs trailing 12-10, Cal Poly took a two point lead after going on a 5-1 run. Cal Poly held a 20-17 advantage before a 3-1 run by the Tritons tied it back up 20-20. After trading the next four points to see it tied at 22 apiece, Cal Poly closed it out by scoring the next three points, capped by a Markovska kill, to win it 25-22 and seal the sweep.
Cal Poly will take on UC Irvine Saturday at 5 p.m. inside the Bren Events Center.
