Cal Poly’s Fourth Quarter Surge Comes Up Just Short Against UC Irvine Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior forward Hannah Scanlan (pictured) scored a season-high 22 points but Cal Poly - despite finishing the game on a 13-4 run - fell to visiting UC Irvine 64-52 Saturday at Mott Athletics.
Scanlan shot 10-11 from the field to go along with five rebounds for the Mustangs (1-13, 0-5 BWC), who were outscored 24-4 in the first quarter. Graduate forward Kirsty Brown finished with 11 points and a career-high four blocks.
The Anteaters (11-8, 6-2 BWC) got out to a 10-0 lead within the first three minutes of the opening quarter. Cal Poly was held to just 2-13 shooting from the field while UC Irvine shot 47 percent.
After the two teams only scored a combined 13 points in the second quarter, the Mustangs found themselves down 31-10 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs battled back after opening the second half on a 9-0 run to trim the Anteater lead to 12. However, UC Irvine answered back with an 11-4 run to push its lead back up to 19.
UC Irvine scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter but was held without a field goal for nearly the next four minutes as Cal Poly cut the lead to 14.
With 2:30 left in the game and Cal Poly trailing by 21, the Mustangs fought their way back to within nine after at 61-52 a 12-1 run. However, Cal Poly was unable to get any closer before UC Irvine went on to win 64-52.
Cal Poly will wrap up its four-game homestand next week starting with Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
