Balanced Scoring Leads Mustangs to 61-52 Win Over Fullerton

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A strong team effort on both ends of the floor with four Mustangs scoring in double figures and holding Cal State Fullerton to under 30 percent shooting led Cal Poly to a 61-52 win over the Titans (8-10, 3-4 BWC) at home Thursday evening.
The Mustangs (2-13, 1-5 BWC) were led by junior guard Maddie Willett's 15 points which included going 3-6 from three. Fellow junior guard Maddie Vick nearly had herself a double-double, finishing with 12 points and a career-high nine assists.
Freshman guard Annika Shad provided a strong spark off the bench scoring nine points, all in the first half, in 10 minutes of action. Graduate forward Kirsty Brown also added nine points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.
The win snapped an 11 game losing skid and is the Mustangs' first conference victory of the season.
Cal Poly's strong defensive effort led to Cal State Fullerton shooting just 1-18 from three. The Mustangs also forced 18 Titans turnovers.
Willett opened the first quarter for the Mustangs by scoring the first five points of the game. A 6-0 run by the Mustangs to end the first, capped by a three from Shah, gave Cal Poly a 16-15 lead.
With 5:30 left in the second quarter, Cal State Fullerton went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to regain the lead 29-26. However, the Mustangs held the Titans scoreless the rest of the half while scoring four straight points to take a 30-29 lead into halftime.
With eight minutes left in the third quarter and trailing 32-30, an 11-2 run by Cal Poly over the course of the next five and half minutes put them up 41-34. They led by as many as nine in the third, holding a 45-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs scored on their opening possession of the fourth before going scoreless the next four and a half minutes while Cal State Fullerton went on a 6-0 run to cut the Cal Poly lead to 47-45.
The Mustangs remained calm, going on a 6-1 run from there to go back up by seven 53-46. Cal Poly never look back, going up by as many as 10 with 1:00 left.
Cal Poly will look to keep things rolling Saturday when hosting Big West leader Long Beach State for a 2 p.m. tip.
