SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Bernie Truax won by fall while Adam Kemp, Lawrence Saenz and Evan Wick all won by major decision, but the 16th-ranked Cal Poly wrestling team fell to No. 5 Arizona State 20-18 in a Pac-12 Conference dual meet Monday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center.
Truax needed just 2 minutes, 4 seconds to pin Jake Ortiz at 184 pounds, improving his record for the season to 7-1. Ranked No. 6 in his weight class, Truax earned his second fall of the season. He is a two-time national qualifier and NCAA All-American with a fourth-place finish in 2021 at 174 pounds.
Truax built a quick 12-1 lead with a takedown, back-to-back four-point near-falls and, after giving up an escape, another takedown before pinning Ortiz for his ninth career fall.

Arizona State, however, won six of the 10 bouts to improve to 5-3 on the year. Cal Poly was wrestling its first official dual meet of the season.
A 34-6 loser to the Sun Devils a year ago in Tempe, Cal Poly wrestled much more closely with Arizona State this time around. Of the six losses, five were decisions by margins of five points or less.
Legend Lamer at 149 fell 6-3 to No. 9 Kyle Parco while Antonio Lorenzo lost an 8-5 decision to No. 4 Brandon Courtney at 125. In addition, Trent Tracy dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 10 Kordell Norfleet at 197, heavyweight Samuel Aguilar was outscored 8-3 by No. 3 Cohlton Schultz and Brawley Lamer fell 10-5 to No. 3 Jacori Teemer at 157.
Kemp tallied six takedowns, an escape and riding time for his win over Coleman. Kemp is 10-2 on the season and ranked No. 9 in the nation.
Saenz compiled five takedowns, an escape and riding time for his major decision and the 28th-ranked wrestler is 7-3 for the year.
Wick, ranked Nos. 1 and 2 by the multitude of Division I polls, outscored No. 6 Valencia with a takedown and two-point near fall in the first period, another takedown in the second period and a reversal early in the third period plus riding time. The transfer from Wisconsin and two-time NCAA All-American is 10-0 this year.
Cal Poly jumped to a 10-0 lead with Kemp's major and the fall by Truax before Arizona State bounced back with four consecutive wins for a 14-10 advantage. The major by Saenz tied the dual meet, but decisions by Parco and Teemer gave the Sun Devils a 20-14 lead and Wick, needing a fall to re-tie the dual, settled for a major.
Cal Poly travels to Little Rock, Ark., for dual meets against UALR and Northern Illinois on Saturday.
