Lafaix Brace Lifts Cal Poly to Big West-Opening Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore midfielder Camille Lafaix's (above) second career two-goal match included Thursday evening's 93rd-minute, game-winning strike as the Cal Poly women's soccer program opened Big West Conference play with a 3-2 victory against Cal State Fullerton inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier recorded three saves for Cal Poly (5-5-0, 1-0-0), which utilized Lafaix's first goal of the evening in the 55th minute to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock. Sophomore Olivia Ortiz and fellow forward Nikki Trucco earned assists in combing to set up Lafaix.
The Titans (3-7-0, 0-0-1), however, equalized 15 minutes later with forward Callie Petrey-Juarez dribbling into Cal Poly's penalty area on the left side before squaring a ball that forward Haley Brown knocked off the right post and past Dorvillier.
Cal Poly, which outshot Cal State Fullerton, 22-13, and forced Titans goalkeeper DeAira Jackson into six saves, produced the game-winner with the only shot attempt of overtime as Ortiz found Lafaix once more near the right post to complete the 3-2 decision.
Lafaix, now second in Cal Poly's lineup with four goals, recorded her only previous two-goal game during a 3-1 victory against Idaho State on Sept. 15, 2019.
The Titans opened the scoring Thursday in the 10th minute through a header from defender Amanda Torres. Cal Poly then equalized 114 seconds before halftime as Lafaix dragged a ball toward the Cal State Fullerton end line before cutting a pass back in front of goal for junior midfielder Megan Hansen, who notched her first goal of the year.
Cal Poly concludes the first week of Big West play when hosting UC Riverside on Sunday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
