SAN LUIS OBISPO – With six regular starters back from the program's 2019 squad, the Cal Poly men's soccer team opens its 2021 training camp on Tuesday morning.
Cal Poly, which also welcomes back 10 letterwinners from its 2019 side (none of the Big West Conference's 10 member programs competed during the 2020-21 school year), enjoys 18 days of preparation prior to the program's Friday, Aug. 27 regular season opener at Santa Clara. In between, the Mustangs host their annual Green vs. Gold intrasquad exhibition on Sunday, Aug. 15 (2 p.m.), visit UCLA for a Saturday, Aug. 21 (7:30 p.m.) exhibition and welcome Division II Fresno Pacific for a Tuesday, Aug. 24 (7 p.m.) exhibition.
In senior forward Manny Perez (above) – who found the back of the opposition net nine times in 2019 – Cal Poly brings back 53 percent of its goal production from two years ago. Perez, whose nine goals ranked second among Big West Conference players two seasons ago, scored in five successive games in 2019. Eight of his nine goals fueled Cal Poly victories while four counted as game-winning strikes.
Defensively, Cal Poly's back line remains intact from 2019 with seniors Freeman Dwamena, Andrew Forth and Josh Graham and junior Andrew Robertson collectively starting 85 percent of the program's 17 matches two years ago. Cal Poly's 2019 defense set a program record by allowing just 61 shots on goal in 17 games
Junior Carlos Arce-Hurtado returns in goal after starting in 13 of 17 matches two years ago. Arce-Hurtado, who played 86 percent of Cal Poly's goalkeeping minutes in 2019, finished that season with four shutouts and ranked third among Big West players in fewest goals conceded (18). In 17 career appearances, Arce-Hurtado ranks fourth in program history with a 1.20 goals against average.
