Cal Poly Closes Homestand with 4-2 Sunday Win versus Sacramento State
8/29/2021 3:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A 49th-minute goal from sophomore defender Kylie Rojas broke a halftime deadlock and freshman midfielder Kate Reedy's 86th-minute strike rounded off the Cal Poly women's soccer program's 4-2 Sunday afternoon victory as the Mustangs closed a season-opening, four-game home stand with their second successive win.
After edging Montana on Thursday, 2-1, Cal Poly (2-2-0) grabbed Sunday's initial lead in the third minute with junior defender Sammy Zanini playing a pass for freshman midfielder McKenna Carbon, who fired past Sacramento State goalkeeper Mia Shalit for her first collegiate goal.
Seven minutes later, however, Sacramento State equalized through midfielder Samantha Craig, whose header from a corner kick opportunity found its way past Mustang junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier.
The Hornets then went up 2-1 in the 11th minute as forward Danna Restom's initial attempt on a breakaway was blocked before her second went into the back of the Mustang net.
Cal Poly, however, tied the matchup at 2-2 in 29th as junior midfielder Sidra Bugsch notched her first goal in two seasons.
Cal Poly, which outshot Sacramento State, 21-4, and kept the Hornets with an attempt in the second half, produced the eventual game-winner five minutes after the break as Rojas had a first attempt stopped by Shalit before the second crossed the goal line.
Reedy (above, right) then rounded off the scoring five minutes from full time with her first career goal as sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz earned the assist.
Dorvillier chalked up two saves for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly hits the road for the first this season when visiting Air Force on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. PT and Colorado College on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. PT.
