ATLANTA — The AVP, the premier professional beach volleyball tour in the country, held its first event of the 2021 season over the weekend in Atlanta with Cal Poly beach volleyball alum Crissy Jones making a big splash to begin her second season on the tour.
Jones, who plays with UCLA alum Zana Muno, reached the semifinals of the event as the No. 5 seed.
Jones and Muno started by defeating Geena Urango and Falyn Fonoimoana in the first round in straight sets. They then beat Maria Clara Salgado and Lexy Denaburg in the second round in two sets.
In the quarterfinals, they upset the No. 1 seed of Emily Day and Betsi Flint in straight sets. In the semifinals, Jones and Muno fell to the No. 2 seed of Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes.
Jones, who played at Cal Poly as a grad transfer during the 2019 season, was an AVCA All-American and was named Big West Pair of the Year with Tia Miric as she helped lead the Mustangs to the program's first Big West championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in her one season.
Also playing in the event were former Cal Poly indoor volleyball standout Jennifer Keddy, a two-time AVCA All-American and 2011 Big West Player of the Year, as well as former Cal Poly beach volleyball assistant coach Allie Wheeler.
The AVP Tour continues this weekend in Manhattan Beach, Calif. August 20-22 followed by an event in Chicago September 3-5.
