Cal Poly Edges Fresno State in Wednesday Exhibition, 2-1

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Nikki Trucco opened Wednesday's scoring with a 10th-minute strike and a 45th-minute Fresno State own goal stood as the difference as the Cal Poly women's soccer program edged the Bulldogs in an exhibition matchup at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, 2-1.

Trucco, who also scored in Cal Poly's 4-0 exhibition victory at Westmont (Aug. 7), took a cross from sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz (above) and fired past Fresno State goalkeeper Valentina Vivas to hand Cal Poly the 1-0, 10th-minute advantage.

Cal Poly forced the eventual decisive goal 42 seconds before the break as a failed clearance from Fresno State freshman defender Haley Espinoza crossed the Bulldog goal line for a 2-0 Mustangs lead.

Fresno State pulled its lone goal back in the 86th minute with midfielder Kassandra Ceja drawing a penalty before converting to halve Cal Poly's lead.

Following the program's annual Green versus White intrasquad match on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m., Cal Poly opens the 2021 regular season with a Thursday, Aug. 19 home meeting against No. 24 Stanford. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
