SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Last weekend, the Cal Poly men's and women's swimming team gathered at Anderson Aquatic Center for the 2021 Spring Invitational with the goal to compete together one final time this year and possibly qualify for Olympic trials.
For the event, each of the swims were in meters rather than yards to comply with Olympic qualifying trials.
Top performances were from Noah Otsuka in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:03.33, missing the Olympic trial cut time by 0.04 of a second. Alex Nikolaev had the top time in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:02.52. Brian Wong swam the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 2:03.38, Ryan Iannaccone had the top time in the 100-meter free at 52.81 while Brandon Toland won the 50-meter free with a time of 23.73. Mustang women's swimmer Samantha Rankin had the top time in the 200-meter IM at 2:23.44.
"A first year that no coach or swimmer will ever forget," said first-year head coach Phil Yoshida. "Congratulations to the team and a huge thank you to the department and university for making all of this possible. A special thank you to the training room staff for their tireless commitment to keeping all of our teams operating and succeeding whether it's in the pool, on the field, court, course, pitch, etc. They have done an amazing service to all Mustangs and we thank them so much."
Overall, there were 29 lifetime best swims set by Cal Poly swimmers and there were six new USA Swimming Futures qualifying swims.
