Cal Poly Tied for Second After First Round of Big West Finals

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- A trio of Cal Poly golfers finished in the top 10 and led the Mustangs to a second-place tie following the first round of play in the 2021 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship on Sunday at the La Quinta Country Club.
Luke Adam carded a one-over-par 73 on the 6,997-yard par-72 layout in the Palm Springs area and is tied for sixth place with three other golfers while both Tanner Podres and Will Draper share 10th place with three other golfers with two-over-par 74s.
As a team, coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs share second place with UC Davis as both the Mustangs and Aggies recorded four-person eight-over-par 296 totals, nine shots behind Long Beach State (287).
Second round is scheduled for Monday with the final round on Tuesday. Cal Poly is bidding for its first Big West title in men's golf since 2006.
Individual leader after 18 holes is Lucas Carper of UC Davis with a two-under-par 70, one shot ahead of Isaac Rodea, Clay Seeber and Hunter Epson, all of Long Beach State, with 71s. Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis is fifth at 72.
Hutchison placed second and Epson fifth in the 2019 Big West Championship at the Wailua Golf Club in Lihue, Hawai'i. The 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Completing Cal Poly's scoring Sunday were Joey Zambri and Austin Liu. Both carded 75s and are tied for 15th place with six other golfers.
Adam notched five birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey while Podres checked in with a quartet of birdies, two bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys. Draper recorded three birdies and five bogeys.
Draper is second in par-3 scoring at even par while Adam is fifth in par-4 scoring at one over par. Podres is fourth and Draper fifth in par-5 scoring at three- and two-under-par respectively.
Adam's five birdies are fourth while Liu's 11 pars are ninth in the field of 45 golfers.
