VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Travis Weston pitched eight scoreless innings for his third win and Nick DiCarlo continued his recent torrid hitting pace with a home run as Cal Poly clinched its three-game non-conference baseball series against San Jose State with a 3-0 shutout Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Weston (3-2) allowed just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts, throwing 86 pitches, 66 for strikes. He retired the first 16 San Jose State batters of the game and set the Spartans down in order six times.
Kyle Scott secured a fly ball to left and two infield groundouts for his second save as Cal Poly notched its third shutout of the season.
DiCarlo, who registered his first four-hit game as a Mustang on Friday, singled in the first inning Saturday and belted a solo home run to left field in the fourth, his second of the season.
With the win, Cal Poly improved to 14-10 on the season, won the series, two games to one, and lifted its mark at Baggett Stadium back over the .500 mark at 9-8.
San Jose State, playing just its second weekend series of the season, fell to 3-4.
Cal Poly jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Myles Emmerson drew a walk with one out and Brooks Lee doubled off the top of the wall in left field, putting runners at second and third. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance 90 feet, Emmerson scoring, and Lee came home on an RBI single to left-center field by Taison Corio.
DiCarlo's home run in the fourth, his fourth as a Mustang, made it 3-0.
Weston lost his bid for a perfect game and no-hitter when Andrew Jurado and Ruben Mercado, the eighth and ninth hitters in the Spartans' batting order, singled with one out in the sixth. Weston wriggled out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
San Jose State's only other hit of the game was a leadoff single by Kai Saterstrom in the eighth. Weston ended his outing on the mound with a double-play ball and a groundout, both to Lee at shortstop.
Cal Poly's bats, held largely silent throughout the series as the Mustangs failed to reach double digits in hits in any of the games, collected six hits Saturday, including the single and home run by DiCarlo and Lee's double.
The game took just 2 hours, 6 minutes to complete, two minutes faster than the previous quickest Mustang game of the season when Weston pitched a complete-game two-hitter with 11 strikeouts against Utah Valley on March 6.
For the series, the Mustangs hit .234, led by DiCarlo who went 6-for-11 with a pair of doubles, a home run and two RBIs. The Mustang pitching staff allowed just 3.67 earned runs per contest and Cal Poly committed only two errors, a season low for a weekend series.
Cal Poly returns to Big West Conference play next weekend, visiting Long Beach State for four games at Blair Field. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, a noon doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. finale Sunday.
