SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Long Beach State scored two unearned runs in the third inning and Johnathan Lavalee pitched seven scoreless innings of one-hit baseball as the Dirtbags earned a 7-0 victory over Cal Poly in the opener of a four-game Big West Conference series Friday night at Blair Field.
Lavallee (2-1) struck out eight and walked two for the win. The only hit he allowed was a double down the left-field line by Brooks Lee in the seventh inning.
Cal Poly, which was hitting .301 after the CSUN series three weeks ago, hit just .244 in the UC San Diego series and .235 in the San Jose State series. The Mustangs' team batting average over their last eight games, including Friday night, is just .221.
Mustang redshirt freshman Drew Thorpe (3-3) notched a dozen strikeouts, one shy of his career high set a year ago against BYU, and allowed just one earned run over seven innings, scattering seven hits with one walk in absorbing the loss.
After Jesse Lopez led off the third inning by reaching on an infield error, Long Beach State scored twice on an RBI double by Stanton Rivera and a run-scoring single by Chase Luttrell.
The Dirtbags added an insurance run in the fifth on three singles by Jonathan Long, Connor Kokx and Brennan Rozell, and Long Beach State broke the game open in the eighth with a two-out bases-loaded three-run double by Long and a bloop RBI single by Rivera.
Cal Poly, which sent the minimum 18 batters to the plate in the first six innings, made its most serious scoring threat in the seventh. Trailing 3-0, the Mustangs loaded the bases on a hit batsman, Lee's double and a walk drawn by Matt Lopez, but a grounder to second base ended the inning.
Aside from Lee's double, Cal Poly's only other hit in the game was a two-out single by Collin Villegas in the eighth.
Kokx, Rivera and Long each collected two of Long Beach State's 10 hits.
Cal Poly, which has won three games via shutout this season, was shut out for the first time Friday night.
The two teams will play a noon doubleheader Saturday, with the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
