The win evened the four-game series at a game apiece. Long Beach State won Friday's series opener, 7-0.
After three scoreless innings Saturday, Cal Poly erupted for a run in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
Tate Samuelson's two-out double tallied the run in the fourth. Key hits in the fifth were an RBI double by Biller, run-scoring single by Myles Emmerson and a two-run double by Lee. Biller and Cole Cabrera knocked in the runs in the sixth with hits.
Alvarez (4-2) walked two and struck out three during his longest stint on the mound as a Mustang, throwing 97 pitches. Derek True secured five outs and Kyle Scott got the final out for his third save.
The loss went to Luis Ramirez (2-2) as he surrendered five runs and six hits over five innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
Cal Poly's nine hits included two each by Lee, Biller and Cabrera, all with a single and double. Held to just two hits through the first eight innings, Long Beach State finished with six hits, scoring five in the ninth on four hits to avert a shutout.
The Mustangs turned a pair of inning-ending 4-6-3 double plays to keep Long Beach State away from the plate in the sixth and seventh frames.
Second game of the doubleheader starts at about 3:50 p.m. with southpaw Travis Weston on the mound for Cal Poly.
