SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Southpaw Andrew Alvarez pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and Brooks Lee and Sam Biller each knocked in a pair of runs as Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State 7-5 in the first game of a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Blair Field.
Long Beach State earned a split of the twinbill with a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap as Alfredo Ruiz outduelled Travis Weston in a battle of redshirt sophomore southpaws.
The split leaves Cal Poly at 15-12 for the season and 5-6 in Big West games. Long Beach State, which won Friday's series opener, 7-0, is now 8-7 and 8-7.
After three scoreless innings in Saturday's opener, Cal Poly erupted for a run in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
Tate Samuelson's two-out double tallied the run in the fourth. Key hits in the fifth were an RBI double by Biller, run-scoring single by Myles Emmerson and a two-run double by Lee. Biller and Cole Cabrera knocked in the runs in the sixth with hits.
Alvarez (4-2) walked two and struck out three during his longest stint on the mound as a Mustang, throwing 97 pitches. Derek True secured five outs and Kyle Scott got the final out for his third save.
The loss went to Luis Ramirez (2-2) as he surrendered five runs and six hits over five innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
Cal Poly's nine hits included two each by Lee, Biller and Cabrera, all with a single and double. Held to just two hits through the first eight innings, Long Beach State finished with six hits, scoring five in the ninth on four hits to avert a shutout.
The Mustangs turned a pair of inning-ending 4-6-3 double plays to keep Long Beach State away from the plate in the sixth and seventh frames.
In the nightcap, Ruiz (1-0) tossed seven scoreless innings with three walks, two hits and seven strikeouts to gain the nod over Weston (3-3), who allowed two runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
The Dirtbags scored single runs in the third and seventh frames and withstood Cal Poly rallies in the seventh and ninth for the victory.
Two singles and an RBI groundout by Chris Jimenez gave the Dirtbags a 1-0 lead in the third. Aiden Malm belted a pinch-hit solo home run to left in the seventh for a 2-0 cushion.
Cal Poly, which failed to take advantage of scoring opportunities in the second and seventh frames, leaving two runners on base both times, opened the ninth with back-to-back doubles by Brooks Lee and Matt Lopez. Devereaux Harrison, however, induced Tate Samuelson to fly out to the right-field corner, Taison Corio to line out to first base and Collin Villegas to strike out, earning his fifth save and ending the game with the potential game-tying run at third base.
Cal Poly was limited to just four hits, including a single and double by Lopez. Long Beach State's seven hits were by seven different batters.
From center field, Cabrera notched Cal Poly's fifth outfield assist of the season, catching a fly ball off the bat of Brennan Rozell in the eighth inning and throwing out Chris Jimenez at the plate for an inning-ending double play. Villegas, Emmerson, Nick DiCarlo and Reagan Doss also have outfield assists this year.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly freshman right-hander Bryce Warrecker (1-1, 9.26 ERA) to face Long Beach State sophomore right-hander Jack Noble (2-1, 2.84 ERA).
