SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Andrew Alvarez established new career highs for wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and pitches thrown while Reagan Doss produced three hits and three RBIs as Cal Poly rallied to defeat UC Riverside 8-2 in the opener of a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Alvarez struck out 12 over eight innings, throwing 128 pitches and improving to 5-2 on the year, helping Cal Poly to its second win of the series.
UC Riverside overcame an early 4-0 deficit to win the nightcap, 9-6.
In the opener, Cal Poly scored seven times in the seventh inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit.
Doss singled to drive in a run in the fourth inning and, after opening the seventh-inning rally with a leadoff double, his two-run single in the same frame capped the seven-run uprising.
Other key hits in the rally were an RBI double by Nick Marinconz to tie the game at 2-2 and a two-run single by Matt Lopez to give Cal Poly the lead for good. Nick DiCarlo was hit by a pitch for an RBI and Joe Yorke contributed a sacrifice fly.
In addition to Doss' three hits, Myles Emmerson added two hits. UC Riverside outhit Cal Poly 10-8, led by Nathan Webb with two singles.
Twice in his Mustang career, Alvarez had struck out eight in a game. On Saturday he struck out the side in the first, seventh and eighth innings and scattered eight hits.
The loss went to Tucker Juline (2-2) as he allowed six runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.
In the nightcap, Cal Poly erupted for four runs in the first inning but couldn't hold on as UC Riverside scored nine times from the third through sixth innings for the win.
In the Mustang first, Doss singled with the bases loaded to knock in the first run and Yorke cleared the bases with a three-run triple to the gap in right-center field.
After UC Riverside bounced back for a 6-4 lead, Cal Poly tied the game in the fifth with a two-out two-run rally, Doss doubled to left-center field for one run and DiCarlo singled through the left side to tie the game at 6-6.
The Highlanders bounced right back with three runs in the sixth, all after two groundouts. Anthony Mata singled deep in the hole at shortstop for one run and Joey Nicolai's two-run single up the middle made it 9-6.
Relievers Abbott Haffar for UC Riverside and Chase Walter for Cal Poly did not give up any runs the rest of the way.
Haffar (1-2) earned the win with 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk with three strikeouts, Walter tossed 3 1/3 scoreless frame with two hits and one walk.
Mustang starter Travis Weston (3-5) suffered the loss. He had not received any run support in his last four starts as Cal Poly scored just six runs, then could not take advantage of a 4-0 lead after one inning Saturday. The southpaw allowed nine runs (six earned) and 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts.
Nicolai was 4-for-5 with three singles, a double and three RBIs for UC Riverside.
Cal Poly, outhit for the third time in the series, was paced by Brooks Lee with a triple and two singles. Doss and Tate Samuelson each added two hits. Doss is 7-for-13 in the series with six RBIs.
The series finale will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with redshirt freshman right-hander Kaden Sheedy (0-0, 7.20 ERA) of Cal Poly to face UC Riverside freshman right-hander Eric Marrujo (1-4, 7.59 ERA).
