SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Nick DiCarlo's first career four-hit game went for naught as Cal Poly dropped a 10-2 decision to San Jose State in the second game of a three-game non-conference baseball series Friday night inside Baggett Stadium.
DiCarlo doubled twice and singled twice, collecting almost half of Cal Poly's nine hits, but the loss evened the series at a game apiece -- the Mustangs won Thursday's opener 10-1 -- setting up the rubber game Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
DiCarlo had produced a trio of three-hit games earlier in his Mustang career, including a 3-for-5 performance, all singles, against UCLA on March 13.
The junior right fielder doubled to left-center field with two outs in the second inning, singled up the middle with one out in the fourth, doubled again to left-center field with two outs in the sixth and drove in a run with an infield single to first base in the eighth.
The 4-for-4 day at the plate lifted DiCarlo's batting average 42 points to .250.
San Jose State, which scored five times in the third inning and never looked back, evened its record at 3-3 while Cal Poly fell to 13-10. The Mustangs, who have a home winning percentage of almost 60 percent since Baggett Stadium opened in 2001, are 8-8 at home this season.
Key hits in San Jose State's third-inning rally were an RBI triple by Robert Hamchuk, a run-scoring double by Ruben Ibarra and an RBI single by Nelson Padilla. The uprising also was fueled by an interference call and a wild pitch.
The Spartans added a run in the sixth and broke the game open with three runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Santiago Cantu and Jack Collette plus another wild pitch.
Cal Poly avoided its first shutout since the last game of the 2019 season by scoring twice in the eighth inning. DiCarlo's infield single tallied the first run and Sam Biller grounded into a force play at second base for the second run.
San Jose State outhit Cal Poly 12-9, led by Dalton Bowling and Kai Saterstrom with two hits each. Hamchuk added a triple.
Mustang southpaw Andrew Alvarez (3-2) retired the first six batters he faced before San Jose State erupted for five runs on six hits in the third frame. Spartan starter Spencer Long (2-0) earned the victory with seven scoreless innings, scattering six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The series finale Saturday afternoon features Cal Poly sophomore southpaw Travis Weston (2-2, 3.26 ERA) against San Jose State junior right-hander Jonathan Clark (0-1, 5.40 ERA).
