UCSB Avenges First-Game Loss on Day 2 to Split Series with Cal Poly

Air Force Reserve Big West Championship Bracket (PDF)
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — UC Santa Barbara bounced back from a Friday loss at Cal Poly, winning 78-68 at Mott Athletics Center in the Big West Conference women's basketball regular-season finale for each squad on Saturday afternoon.
The 10-point Gaucho win reversed a 30-point (76-46) Cal Poly victory in the first game of the back-to-back matchups.
Cal Poly is the No. 6 seed to the upcoming Big West Tournament. The Mustangs (12-10 overall / 8-8 BWC) will tip off at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Las Vegas, facing No. 3-seeded Long Beach State (12-8 / 11-7).
The action vs. LBSU from Mandalay Bay's Michelob Ultra Arena will be telecast live on the WatchESPN / ESPN3 app, available to all subscribers on mobile or desktop platforms, and will also be broadcast live on ESPN 1280 AM / 101.7 FM The Ticket locally (along with the TuneIn app for online radio).
The Mustangs led 18-17 at the end of the first quarter on Saturday, and then 31-30 by halftime. Senior forward Sierra Campisano gave Cal Poly a 36-32 lead two minutes into the third, but the tide then began to turn for UCSB, which erupted for a 16-0 run.
Gaucho guard Danae Miller capped the pivotal sequence with a pair of free throws providing a 48-36 lead 2:33 before the fourth.
After trailing by as many as 18 early in the final quarter, however, Cal Poly battled back, pulling to within 63-56 thanks to an Abbey Ellis 3-pointer to punctuate an 11-0 run, with 3:09 remaining.
Miller answered with a 3 soon afterward, though, to re-establish the double-digit gap, and UCSB (7-13 overall / 7-9 BWC) didn't allow its advantage to diminish past a seven-point margin the rest of the way. Miller finished with a game-high 26 points, including making all 12 of her free-throw attempts.
Campisano led Cal Poly with 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while fellow senior forward Kirsty Brown added 12 points to go with 10 boards (notching her third double-double in a five-game stretch) plus three steals.
