No. 5 Mustangs Win All Three Matches Friday, Extend Win Streak to Eight Matches

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team won all three of its matches against Big West opponents Friday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex to extend its win streak to eight matches in a row.
The No. 5 Mustangs (11-3) swept both CSU Bakersfield and UC Davis by scores of 5-0 and then capped off the evening with a 4-1 win over No. 19 Long Beach State.
In the morning match against the Roadrunners, the No. 1 duo of senior Emily Sonny and junior Macy Gordon got things going with a dominant 21-8, 21-12 win over Emily Hansen and Hana Makonova.
The No. 4 pairing of freshman Josie Ulrich and sophomore Vanessa Roscoe followed suit shortly thereafter with a 21-12, 21-12 victory over Brooke Boiseau and Anna Unke.
Grad transfer Amy Ozee and sophomore Jayelin Lombard then made it 3-0 Cal Poly after a 21-18, 21-9 at the No. 2 spot over Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat.
The No. 5 pairing of freshman Piper Naess and sophomore Hannah Rogers then won their first match of the year together 21-17, 21-14 over Mapu Sekona and Leisa Elisaia.
The 5-0 victory was later clinched for Cal Poly after the No. 3 duo of freshman Sam Strah and sophomore Eleonore Johansen won their match in three sets 21-7, 12-21, 15-5.

A few hours later, the Mustangs returned to Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex to take on the Aggies of UC Davis, also sweeping them 5-0.
This time it was the No. 3 pairing of juniors Tia Miric and Mariah Whalen getting Cal Poly on the board first with a 21-12, 21-12 win over Alicia Letvin and Maddie Smith.
The No. 1 duo of Sonny and Gordon then won their match in straight sets for a second consecutive time on the day 21-14, 21-9 over Paloma Bowman and Colleen McGuire to make it 2-0 in favor of Cal Poly.
Roscoe and Ulrich, this time playing at the No. 5 position in the lineup, later picked up Cal Poly's third point of the match after getting a 21-13, 25-23 win over Sam Lazenby and Summer Bouquet.
At the No. 2 spot, Ozee and Lombard took their match in three sets 21-15, 19-21, 15-12 over Heather Reed and Megan Luly to push the Mustangs' lead to 4-0.
Strah and Johansen rounded out the 5-0 win for Cal Poly after earning another hard fought three-set win, this time at the No. 4 spot, 21-14, 23-25, 20-18 over Jane Seslar and Ashlee Goycoochea. Strah and Johansen are now 6-2 together this season.

In the final match of the evening, the Mustangs faced No. 19 Long Beach State, earning a hard fought 4-1 win with three matches going to three sets.
Whalen and Miric started things off once again at the No. 3 spot with a 21-13, 21-13 triumph over Kenzie Holt and Makenzie Griffin. Whalen and Miric are 4-2 together so far this year.
Lombard and Ozee then battled to come out with a 22-20, 21-18 win at the No. 2 spot over Nicci Reinking and Katie Kennedy to make it 2-0 Cal Poly. Ozee and Lombard are now 9-4 together this season.
Later after Long Beach State won at the No. 4 position in three sets, the No. 5 Mustang duo of Roscoe and Ulrich clinched the match for Cal Poly after griding out a three-set comeback win over Jillian Rodriguez and Emily Mattoon 18-21, 21-11, 17-15. The pair now has a 7-4 record together this season.
Gordon and Sonny then wrapped up the match with a three-set comeback win of their own at the No. 1 spot, beating Mari Molina and Tyler Spriggs 16-21, 21-13, 15-13 to seal the 4-1 victory for Cal Poly. The back-to-back Big West Pairs Team of the Week is now a team-best 10-3 together this year.
The Mustangs will play two more matches Saturday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex, beginning with CSUN at 2:15 p.m. followed by a match against No. 10 Hawai'i at 6 p.m.
