No. 5 Mustangs Hosting Five Big West Teams At Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex This Weekend

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Winners of its last five matches, the fifth-ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball team will host five of the other six teams in the Big West Friday and Saturday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex for a round-robin style event.
There will be fifteen matches over the two-day event with each team playing five matches and all playing each other. On Friday, the No. 5 Mustangs (8-3) will play at 10 a.m. against CSU Bakersfield (1-2), 3 p.m. against UC Davis (1-7) and 6:45 p.m. against No. 19 Long Beach State (6-6). On Saturday, Cal Poly will face CSUN (5-4) at 2:15 p.m. and No. 10 Hawai'i (2-2) at 6 p.m.
Due to local county and state COVID-19 protocols, fan attendance is not allowed. Fans can follow live results for all Cal Poly matches on twitter (@calpolybeach). A full schedule of the matches each day can be found below.
The Mustangs are coming off a pair of wins last Sunday over Boise State and No. 15 Arizona in their 2021 home opener. Cal Poly is now 4-0 so far at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex after winning both of their matches there last year.
Six of the Mustangs' 11 matches this season have been against fellow ranked teams and two more will be added to that this weekend in No. 10 Hawai'i and No. 19 Long Beach State. They are 3-3 so far against those ranked opponents.
Cal Poly's No. 1 pairing of senior Emily Sonny and junior Macy Gordon has been its strongest so far, posting a team-best record of 7-3 so far having won their last four matches. For their strong play, they have been named the Big West Pairs Team of the Week the past two weeks.
Meanwhile, the No. 2 duo of grad transfer Amy Ozee and sophomore Jayelin Lombard have also been strong. They are 6-4 and have also been named Big West Pairs Team of the Week once this season.
The Mustangs are still the defending Big West Conference champions after winning the program's first conference championship in 2019. They currently have the best record of all Big West teams this season.
All time, Cal Poly is 11-3 against CSU Bakersfield and beat the Roadrunners earlier this season in Bakersfield 4-1, 1-0 against UC Davis beating them 5-0 in 2019, 2-8 against Long Beach State but won the last meeting in the 2019 Big West Conference Tournament 5-0, 6-2 against CSUN and have won the last six meetings, and 3-8 against Hawai'i but have won three of the last four meetings.
Following this weekend, Cal Poly will hit the road next weekend to travel up to Palo Alto to face Cal and Stanford on Saturday, April 3.
