SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and three Mustang pitchers combined to strike out 14 Bruins as Cal Poly upset No. 6 UCLA 5-4 in the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series Friday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Starter Drew Thorpe struck out eight over 4 1/3 innings while Kyle Scott and Dylan Villalobos each fanned three Bruin batters for Cal Poly, which extended its winning streak to four games and has won six of its last seven to improve to 7-4 for the year.
UCLA, which had a six-game winning streak snapped, fell to 9-4.
UCLA scored the first three runs of the game -- one in the first and two more in the third -- for a 3-0 lead.
Cal Poly battled back with a two-run triple down the right field line by Brooks Lee in the fourth and a two-RBI single by Matt Lopez in the sixth for a 4-3 lead.
UCLA tied the game in the eighth on Josh Hahn's groundout to second base.
In the bottom of the eighth, Tate Samuelson drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on Lopez's fly ball to center field and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out infield error.
Villalobos (1-0) walked the leadoff Bruin batter in the ninth, but struck out the next three batters to secure the victory. In two scoreless innings, Villalobos did not allow a hit and walked one.
Thorpe threw 92 pitches in his 4 1/3-inning no-decision stint, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs with one walk. Scott allowed one run and three hits over 2 2/3 innings of middle relief, walking two.
The loss went to Jake Saum (0-2), the fourth of six UCLA pitchers used by head coach John Savage. Saum faced two batters, issuing the one-out walk to Samuelson in the eighth.
Bruin starter Zach Pettway gave up two runs and two hits over four innings with two walks and four strikeouts in the no-decision.
UCLA outhit Cal Poly 10-7, led by first baseman JT Schwartz with two singles and a double. Center fielder Kevin Kendall, shortstop Matt McLain and third baseman Kyle Karros all singled twice.
Lee produced a triple and single, Cole Cabrera a double and single and Lopez two singles to lead Cal Poly offensively.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday night at 6 with Cal Poly sophomore southpaw Travis Weston (1-1, 1.96 ERA) to face UCLA sophomore right-hander Jesse Bergin (2-1, 1.72 ERA).
Sunday's series finale starts at 1 o'clock.
