No. 6 UCLA Evens Series Against Cal Poly with 13-12 Victory
3/13/2021 11:19:00 PM | Baseball
That wasn't enough as No. 6 UCLA erased an early 5-0 deficit with 11 runs in the second, third and fourth frames, then had to hold on for a 13-12 victory Saturday night inside Baggett Stadium, evening the non-conference baseball series at a game apiece.
Lee tied a school Division I record with three doubles, accomplished by 14 others before him. Emmerson added a double and two singles while DiCarlo singled three times and knocked in two runs in Cal Poly's highest offensive output of the season.
Matt Lopez, Joe Yorke and Sam Biller all had two hits as the Mustangs outhit the Bruins 17-15.
Three Mustang errors, however, led to four unearned UCLA runs.
Mikey Perez led UCLA's onslaught with a pair of home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored while Kevin Kendall added three singles and two RBIs.
With the win, UCLA improved to 10-4. Cal Poly, which had won four straight and six of its last seven, slipped to 7-5.
Cal Poly erupted for five runs in the first inning. Lee doubled to drive in the first run, DiCarlo's two-run single made it 3-0 and Yorke added a two-run double for a 5-0 Mustang advantage.
The Bruins wasted no time getting back into the game, scoring four in the second, five in the third and two more in the fourth for an 11-5 lead. It was 12-5 before Cal Poly compiled its second five-run outburst of the game in the sixth, trimming UCLA's lead to 12-10.
Neither team scored in the seventh and eighth innings. Matt McLain's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth gave UCLA a 13-10 cushion and Cal Poly tallied two in the bottom of the ninth on an infield single by Emmerson and a wild pitch.
With the tying run at second base, Brooks Lee grounded out sharply to second base, ending the game.
UCLA starter Jesse Bergin (3-0) earned the victory despite allowing six runs and eight hits over five innings. Sean Mullen, the fifth Bruin pitcher of the game, picked up his second save though he allowed two runs and three hits in the ninth.
Southpaw Travis Weston, who pitched a complete-game two-hitter with a career-high 11 strikeouts last weekend against Utah Valley, surrendered five runs and six hits without a strikeout in two-plus innings of work versus UCLA.
The loss went to Bryce Warrecker (0-1) as the freshman right-hander allowed UCLA's go-ahead run in the third.
Rubber game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly junior southpaw Andrew Alvarez (2-0, 2.77 ERA) to face UCLA junior right-hander Nick Nastrini (2-0, 1.53 ERA).
