RENO, Nevada -- Luka Wick and Samuel Aguilar earned second-place finishes while Trevor Tinker finished third and Abe Hinrichsen fifth, highlighting Cal Poly's performance at the 26th annual Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Events Center.
Leaving most of the starting lineup back home, sixth-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas entered 18 of his younger wrestlers and redshirts into the one-day tournament featuring wrestlers from 56 schools or clubs.
Wick won his first four matches by fall to reach the finals at 149 pounds before he withdrew in the finals. Ramon Ramos of Arizona State received the win by medical forfeit as Wick tweaked a knee in his semifinal win. His quickest fall was in 1 minute, 42 seconds over Lane Stigall of Oregon State in the semifinals. Wick is now 12-0 on the year.
Making just his second appearance on the mat this season, Aguilar scored a decision, major decision and two falls to reach the finals at 285 pounds, then was edged in overtime by Gary Traub of Oregon State. Traub scored a takedown 21 seconds into the sudden-victory period for the 3-1 win. Aguilar sports a 4-3 mark for the year.
Also wrestling at 285 pounds, Tinker scored two falls and a major decision before he ran into Traub, ranked 10th in the nation by InterMat, in the semifinals, falling 9-3. Tinker bounced back with a 19-5 major decision over KC Buday of Providence for third place. Tinker is 8-4 for the season.
At 133, Hinrichsen, a true freshman, placed fifth. He officially wrestled just three times, earning a win by medical forfeit and two others because his opponents had already wrestled the maximum six matches on the day. Hinrichsen's 3-1 mark lifted his record for the season to 12-7.
Four other Mustang wrestlers finished one victory shy of placing. They were Tyler Avila at 157 pounds, Nathan Tausch at 165, Jarad Priest at 174 and Trent Tracy at 197.
Avila earned two decisions and a major before he was stopped short by Sal Silva of Southeastern in a 13-11 decision. Tausch was 4-1 on the day before he was edged by Frank Almaguer of California Baptist in a 3-1 decision.
Priest posted a 3-1 mark before falling to Albert Urias of CSU Bakersfield in an 8-3 decision while Tracy carded a fall, technical fall and decision before he was beaten by No. 32 Nick Stemmet of Stanford in a 3-1 decision.
