Midlands and Crab Feed Canceled; Mustangs Prepare for Dual Meet

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- For the second straight year, the 58th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships wrestling tournament has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, Cal Poly's sixth annual Alumni and Booster Weekend, scheduled for Jan. 7-8 and which included a crab feed and silent auction, has been canceled as well on advice from the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department.
The two-day Midlands on Dec. 29-30, slated to take place at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, was canceled out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of all tournament participants. The top-tier collegiate wrestling event, hosted by Northwestern University, will not be rescheduled for this season and will look to return to the mat in December of 2022.
Tickets will be refunded at the original place of purchase. For any questions, please contact NOW Arena at 847-649-2270 or at BoxOffice@NOWArena.com with any questions.
"The tradition of the Midlands is a major part of the wrestling community. However, ensuring the health and safety of all participants, coaches, staff members, and fans is our top priority," said Director of the Midlands Championships Tim Cysewski. "Given the evolution of the most recent COVID-19 variant and a recent surge in cases, we certainly understand the gravity of the situation and our responsibility to limit its spread. While we are disappointed that we do not get to host this year's event, we fully expect the Midlands to be back and better than ever in 2022."
Considered to be the nation's premier non-conference collegiate wrestling tournament, the Midlands feature some of the country's highest-ranked wrestlers and teams each year. This year's tournament was expected to bring in top-ranked wrestlers from 35 schools across the country, along with the introduction of a women's division for the first time ever composed of 150 women's wrestlers.
Cal Poly head coach Jon Sioredas and his staff were to send 11 wrestlers to the event -- one in each of the weight classes and another wrestler competing unattached.
The Mustangs will get ready for their first official dual meet of the 2021-22 season on Friday, Jan. 7, against Northern Colorado. First bout inside Mott Athletics Center is set for 7 p.m.
While the dual meet is still planned to be contested, all other activities related to the Alumni and Booster Weekend have been canceled, including the social hour on Jan. 7 prior to the dual meet and the crab feed and silent auction on Jan. 8.
Those who have already purchased tickets for the weekend's events have two options to consider. Those who wish to make their payment a donation to the Cal Poly wrestling program need to reply to an email from the Cal Poly Ticket Office by Sunday, Jan. 2. The rest will be refunded the full purchase amount on Jan. 3. The names of all donors will be placed at will call to provide you free entry to the Jan. 7 dual meet.
For more information on the refund, call the Cal Poly Ticket Office at (805) 756-4849.
