Strong Second Half Propels Mustangs to Win Over St. Thomas

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Five Mustangs scored at least six points as the Cal Poly women's basketball team outscored St. Thomas in the second half 39 to 28 to earn a 63-51 win over the Tommies Friday to open the Holiday Beach Classic at Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs (1-2) were led by junior guard Maddie Vick's 10 points and six assists. Junior forward Julia Nielacna had a Cal Poly career-high nine points and three rebounds. Freshman guard Annika Shah added eight points, senior forward Hannah Scanlan chipped in seven points and four rebounds, and freshman guard Sydney Bourland had six points and a career-high six rebounds.
St. Thomas committed 20 turnovers which Cal Poly turned into 21 points. For the game the Mustangs shot 47-percent from the field and held the Tommies to 26-percent shooting.
Cal Poly scored the opening five points of the game. St. Thomas scored the next eight points before a 7-0 run by the Mustangs allowed them to regain a 12-8 lead. St. Thomas then ended the first quarter on a 6-2 run to make it 14-14.
In the second quarter, St. Thomas took a 22-18 lead before the Mustangs ended the quarter on a 6-1 run highlighted by a buzzer-beating jumper by Vick to take a 24-23 lead into halftime.
St. Thomas began the third quarter on a 10-0. Cal Poly answered back with a 17-4 run to finish the quarter and take a 41-37 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Cal Poly's run continued into the fourth as the Mustangs scored the first 12 points of the quarter to push their lead to 53-37. They never looked back from there as they went ahead as much as 21 at 61-40.
Cal Poly will look to make it two in a row Saturday when they host Montana State at 2:30 at Mott Athletics Center.
