SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Junior guard Maddie Willett (pictured at top
) had a team-high 18 points and two other Mustangs scored in double figures but Santa Clara scored 17 points off Cal Poly's 20 turnovers to defeat the Mustangs in their season-opener Wednesday night at the Leavey Center, 91-77.
Willett was 6-12 from the field to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Freshman guards Sydney Bourland (pictured at right) and Annika Shah had nice performances in their debut regular season game. Bourland had 13 points while Shah added 10. Junior guard Maddie Vick had a solid all-around game with eight points, a team-high six assists, and four rebounds. Fifth-year senior Kirsty Brown also chipped in eight points to go with a team-high six rebounds.
The Mustangs shot the ball well, shooting nearly 53-percent for the game and was 6-14 from behind the arc. However, Cal Poly's turnovers combined with Santa Clara shooting nearly 49-percent from the field themselves and going 16-21 from the free throw line while the Mustangs were 9-13 proved to be the difference.
Both teams came out of the gate shooting the ball at an extremely high rate. The Mustangs were shooting 73-percent from the field through the first six minutes of the game and finished the quarter shooting 60-percent. Santa Clara meanwhile was 56-percent from the field and led 27-20 at the end of the first quarter.
With Cal Poly trailing 34-25 with 7:30 left in the second quarter, the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to trim the Broncos lead to one. However, Cal Poly was held scoreless the final five minutes of the first half as Santa Clara scored 11 unanswered points to take a 46-35 lead into halftime.
Bourland got Cal Poly on the board first in the third quarter to cut the Broncos' lead to nine but the Mustangs weren't able to get any closer than that and led 65-49 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Santa Clara took its largest lead of the game of 18 at 73-55 with eight minutes left to play. Cal Poly continued to show fight and heart and eventually got it back to within 10 points with three minutes left to play but that is as close as they would get.
The Mustangs will now have 13 days off before their home opener against No. 6 Louisville on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m.
