SAN LUIS OBISPO – After allowing just one goal in two matches, recording his second shutout of the season and helping the Cal Poly men's soccer program to an unbeaten opening week of Big West Conference play, junior goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday afternoon.
Arce-Hurtado was called upon to make just one save in Cal Poly's Big West-opening, 1-1 draw at Sacramento State (Sept. 29) as a 68th-minute equalizer from Hornets defender Genaro Alfaro cancelled out Mustang senior forward Manny Perez's 55th-minute opener.
Arce-Hurtado then made four saves – three of which came in the first half to preserve a scoreless matchup – in Cal Poly's 1-0 home win against CSUN (Oct. 3). A 68th-minute header from Cal Poly freshman defender Jacob Glass decided the game as Arce-Hurtado registered his second shutout of the year.
Also named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 6, Arce-Hurtado ranks third among conference goalkeepers with a 1.05 goals against average.
Unbeaten after the opening week of Big West play, second-place Cal Poly (3-4-2, 1-0-1) closes a two-match home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 6 with a 7 p.m. meeting against UC San Diego.
