Five Mustangs Win Multiple Events in Dual Meet Against UCSB Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Five different Mustangs won individual events and the Cal Poly men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to win 17 of the 32 events during Saturday's dual meet against Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara at Anderson Aquatic Center.
The Cal Poly men's team beat UCSB 146-142 while the Gaucho women's team beat the Mustangs 174-120. The men's team win over the Gauchos is the first since the 2018-2019 season and improves them to 2-0 this season in dual meets. On the men's side, sophomore swimmer Kieran McNulty won both the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:40.73 and the 500 free with a time of 4:34.23. Senior swimmer Gennady Sytnik took first in both the 100 back in a time of 50.24 and the 200 back with a time of 1:50.46. Junior swimmer Brian Wong won both the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.16 and the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:49.17. Junior diver Max Powell took home first place in both the 1-meter dive with a score of 237.30 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 280.43. Junior swimmer Ryan Iannaccone also picked up a win on the afternoon, taking home first in the 50 free with a time of 20.83. In the team relays, the Cal Poly men's quartet of Sytnik, junior Andre Yarcan, senior Christopher Hogan, and Iannaccone combined to win the 400 medley relay after swimming it in a time of 3:22.24. Later, the Mustang squad of McNulty, sophomore Justin Mills, Iannaccone, and Wong teamed up to win the 200 free relay in a time of 1:22.92, just a little over two seconds behind the Cal Poly school record. On the women's side, junior swimmer Kaia Anderson took home first-place in two events, first in the 1,650 free in a time of 17:42.00 and later in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.23. Freshman swimmer Didi Djatej won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:06.07. Sophomore swimmer Junie Leigh Carlos won the 200 back in a time of 2:04.44.
In diving, junior Jacqueline Samaniego took first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 229.28 and senior Joelle Weltner won the 3-meter dive with a score of 217.65.
Both Cal Poly's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back at Anderson Aquatic Center next Saturday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. to host Cal Baptist University.
