Mustang Women's Track & Field Combines for 3 Additional Top-5 Indoor Marks in School History on Day 1 of New Mexico Classic
ALBUQUERQUE — Cal Poly junior Mikaela Romanini broke her own school record for the 600 meters on Friday, leading a total of 13 performances registering as either collegiate PRs or indoor season-bests as the Mustang women's track & field squad opened the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Romanini finished third out of 31 student-athletes inside Albuquerque Convention Center, with a performance of 1:31.90 — 1.86 seconds faster than her record at the distance a year ago. She also improved her season-best by a 2.2-second margin.
Michelle Chandler also entered the all-time Cal Poly Top 5 for the 600m, taking 12th place via 1:36.60, good for No. 4 in school history. Avi' Tal Wilson-Perteete of UNLV won the event with a time of 1:29.37, ahead of Sydney Milani from Alabama (1:31.09) for the victory.
Erin Moss and Kaila Bishop also added 17th (in 1:38.59) and 24th-place (via 1:42.31) times in their debuts for the 600m as sophomores. Earlier in the day, both Moss and Bishop also competed in the 400 meters, as both posted collegiate PRs: 59.52 seconds for Moss (placing 23rd overall) and 1:00.27 for Bishop (26th altogether).
Starting the afternoon with the high jump, a duo of Mustangs each cleared 5 feet, 5.25 inches, as senior Julianna Ruotolo took fourth place (needing only one attempt at the bar) while matching her season-best height, while redshirt freshman Delaney Peranich tallied ninth place, soaring over the 1.66-meter bar on her third jump to establish a new collegiate best.
Ruotolo also made her collegiate debut in the long jump, landing a 23rd-place mark of 17' 9.75".
Meanwhile, the 200-meter dash saw Ann Caroline Kaseberg record a time of 25.02 seconds — just one-hundredth off her indoor PR — taking 39th overall out of a field of 68 competitors.
Also in the 200m, two Cal Poly true freshmen also entered the all-time Mustang Top 5 for the indoor sprint, as Belle Aduaka moved to No. 4 in program winter history with a performance of 25.25 seconds (46th overall in the Finals), and Shelby Daniele became No. 5 in school history, taking second place in the unseeded heats via 25.43.
Toward the end of the evening, two Mustangs who've earned all-conference accolades in the spring, Kayla Myers and Sydney Jaques, tied for fifth place overall (fourth among collegians) in the pole vault, each setting new indoor-career bests. Both Myers and Jaques cleared 12' 3.25" on their first attempt, before the progression elevated to 12' 9" next.
The meet continues throughout Saturday, with the Day 2 schedule of events spanning from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mountain Time.
