12/30/2020 4:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Following a 4-2 opening month of non-league play, the Cal Poly women's basketball team looks to start Big West Conference action on the right foot, as the Mustangs ring in 2021 visiting UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday. Both of the matchups with the Tritons are set to tip off at 3 p.m. on New Year's Day & Jan. 2 in RIMAC Arena.
Fans are not permitted to attend at this time; however, in addition to being video-streamed through BigWest.TV/ESPN3, each of the back-to-backs will be broadcast from La Jolla with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer via GoPoly.com. All video and radio links to follow the action throughout the season can be found on the GoPoly.com schedule page.
Ellis' 39 points at Viejas Arena, the most by a Mustang since Jan. 4, 2018, helped her repeat as Big West Player of the Week for Dec. 29, picking up her third career conference certificate.
The point guard out of Australia now ranks No. 30 nationally in free-throw percentage (.931), 33rd in the country in scoring (averaging 20.3 points) and No. 29 in steals per game (3.2). A 2020 Big West All-Freshman honoree and media 2020-21 Preseason All-Conference pick, Ellis has also made two game-winning baskets over the last two years, each in 57-56 victories, respectively, over Lamar University and Santa Clara.
CAMPISANO ALSO PRODUCES CAREER HIGH AFTER AWARD: Cal Poly's Sierra Campisano also recently established a career high, as she collected 18 rebounds at California Baptist on Dec. 19. Now averaging 10.8 boards per game, the senior forward from San Diego ranks No. 20 in the country in rebounding. A grad of Torrey Pines High School, this will be her second-straight trip close to home.
She was selected as Big West Player of the Week on Dec. 14, as well as College Sports Madness' BWC Weekly MVP for both Dec. 14 & 21.
Alongside her rebounding average, Campisano, a 2020 all-conference first-team honoree, currently ranks seventh throughout the league in scoring (via 16.0 points per game) and second in blocks (1.7).
A LOOK AT UC SAN DIEGO: The Tritons have only had one live game opportunity in their debut voyage in Division I, leading 28-25 over California Baptist on Dec. 21 before the game was halted at halftime. In the half against the Lancers, senior guard Tyla Turner led UCSD with 12 points, including a 2-for-2 display from 3-point range.
Junior forward Sydney Brown and junior guard Brianna Claros also added seven and six points apiece through the initial two quarters vs. CBU.
The two schools have only met once previously: on Dec. 19, 1983, when the Mustangs won 69-57 at UCSD.
Also back for the Mustangs after starting at last year's tournament are senior guards Chantel Govan and Malia Holt. The duo combined for 1.9 steals, 4.2 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game out of the backcourt in 2020 as Cal Poly won four of its last five games. Additionally, also among Cal Poly's top scorers through the initial six games are redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Willett and senior forward Kirsty Brown, who head into this weekend averaging 5.5 & 5.0 points apiece.
Brown went 6-of-10 to match her career high of 12 points in the 70-59 victory over Santa Clara on Dec. 15, while Willett is also averaging 4.0 rebounds in her return to the court following 2019 Big West All-Freshman accolades.

ELLIS COLLECTS BACK-TO-BACK PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK ACCOLADES: In a span of about three hours on Dec. 21, Cal Poly sophomore Abbey Ellis was announced as the Big West Conference Player of the Week and then established a new career-best scoring effort, as her 39-point performance led the Mustangs to a 73-63 road win over San Diego State.?? 12 RETURNING LETTERWINNERS JOINED BY 7 NEWCOMERS: Last season, Cal Poly opened the conference tournament with back-to-back wins, advancing to the Big West Semifinals at the Honda Center prior to the cancellation of the remainder of play. During the pair of victories, the Mustangs saw Ellis average 25 points, while Campisano added 22 per game en route to Cal Poly's second trip to Anaheim in the previous three years. The Mustangs were voted fourth and fifth, respectively, in the league office's 2020-21 Big West Preseason Coach and Media Polls. Cal Poly received three first-place votes out of 20 in the media poll (along with 126 voting points) and two first-place ballots out of 11 in the coaches poll (totaling 83 points).??
