EDITOR'S NOTE: Each Wednesday from September to December, Cal Poly will look back at notable performances from past fall season teams through the Golden 1 Credit Union Golden Moments in Mustang History series.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- One year ago this week, Caroline Cantlay shattered the Cal Poly women's golf record for the lowest score in a single round.
On Oct. 29, 2019, at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on the 6,128-yard Kapolei Golf Course, located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, Cantlay carded a 65, erasing the all-time scoring record of 66 set by Madison Hirsch at the Firestone Grill Invitational in September 2013 at Monarch Dunes.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs also shattered the school record for a single round by three strokes with a four-person 11-under-par 277 total. Cantlay's record round is this week's Golden Moment in Mustang History presented by Golden 1 Credit Union.
A junior, Cantlay recorded seven birdies and 11 pars in her bogey-free round, jumping from a 19th-place tie into the lead.
"What a great day for Caroline, setting a new school record of minus-7," said Aagaard. "Putts were dropping to say the least and she was hitting it close with a bogey-free round."
The next day, Cantlay posted a 73 and finished in a tie for second place. Cal Poly placed third behind Sacramento State and BYU.
Cantlay's previous best score for a single round at Cal Poly was a pair of 68s in the first and third rounds of the 2018 UC Irvine Invitational. The Rosary Academy graduate won that event.
