SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by a brace from sophomore forward Summer Yates, the Washington women's soccer team picked up a 5-0 win over Cal Poly on Thursday night in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Huskies (4-2-2), who made the trip to San Luis Obispo coming off a 3-1 road win over then-No. 17 TCU, opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Kennedy Smith swooped in to secure a rebound of a blocked Ameera Hussen shot, converting a putback with a left-footed shot inside the near post.
Then four minutes later, Yates — a 2018 Pac-12 All-Freshman selection — was on the receiving end of a cross delivered to the far post from the right side of the box by Isabella Castro, and finished at close range to double the lead.
Washington made it 3-0 with under a minute to play to halftime, as Karlee Stueckle angled a cross in from the right to Castro for a tap-in just a few steps away from the goal line.
Yates would tally her second goal of the evening in the 50th minute, running onto a pass upfield from Helena Reischling as she broke free along the right side of the pitch for a 1-v-1 opportunity, before beating the keeper to the left, providing a 4-0 lead.
UW tacked on the final goal six minutes from full time, when Ally Remington converted a rebound at point-blank range following-up on a shot by Makayla Woods which had been deflected mid-air by Sophia Brown.
Brooke Rubinstein forced a save by UW's Siena Ruelas in the 18th minute, and again placed an attempt on goal in the 85th which was saved by Dani Hansen.
Also for the Mustangs (2-6-1), Jordan Patane tested Washington with a 41st-minute look, but Ruelas stepped in front to keep the shutout. The Huskies finished with a 25-8 advantage in total shots for the game.
Up next, Cal Poly heads back out on the road, visiting Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday in Riverside. The WAC Digital Network will broadcast Sept. 22's game from Lancer Field.
