Trucco, Hansen Score for Mustangs, but Cal Baptist Tops Cal Poly, 4-2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman Nikki Trucco tallied her first collegiate goal on Sunday at Cal Baptist, and sophomore Megan Hansen would later add her second career goal thanks to a penalty, but the Lancer women's soccer team scored twice in each half to earn a 4-2 win over the visiting Mustangs.
Cal Poly finished the day with a 23-10 advantage in total shot attempts, including a 12-8 edge in shots placed on goal — along with an 8-3 margin in corner-kick opportunities — but Cal Baptist made its chances pay off, beginning 12 minutes in.
Jordan Dow delivered the Lancers a 1-0 lead, coming in to rebound a blocked attempt by Rola Badawiya, shooting into the left side of the net from only a couple yards out.
The Mustangs pulled even in the 15th minute at Lancer Field, as another freshman, Camille Lafaix, assisted Trucco for the equalizer. Trucco came to the Mustangs after scoring 33 goals for California High in San Ramon last year. (Meanwhile the assist was Lafaix's second in a three-game stretch, as she previously had a service during Cal Poly's 3-1 win at Idaho State on Sept. 15.)
Cal Baptist (6-2-1), however, would retake the lead only three minutes later, when Badawiya settled a cross from Amy Aquino along the left side of the box, shook loose the last Mustang defender for a 1-v-1 matchup with the keeper, and blasted a shot into the right side of the goal.
Badawiya would give herself a brace four minutes after the teams returned from halftime, appearing to attempt a cross from the right flank, but the ball ricocheted between an onrushing Lancer and the Mustang back line right at the goalmouth, then bobbled backwards over the line, making it 3-1.
CBU took a 4-1 lead in the 79th minute, beginning when Badawiya took aim at a potential hat trick. Mustang keeper Sophia Brown came out to block her attempt with a dive, but Kacie Dennis was only a few steps to her left to secure the rebound, and on one touch tapped the loose ball into the roof of an empty net.
Cal Poly (2-7-1) pulled within 4-2 in the 83rd, when Hansen converted a PK. Hansen (Rio Americano HS/Sacramento) also scored on a penalty in 2018 at UC Irvine, making her 2-for-2 from the spot in college.
The Mustangs then created a trio of chances late, looking to move within one goal of potentially equalizing, but Lafaix (84'), Sidra Bugsch (89') and Brooke Oleson (under a half-minute away from full time) shot wide, as CBU moved to 4-1-0 at home in 2019.
Up next, Cal Poly returns home to host Seattle U at 12 noon on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. For Youth Day, admission is free for kids 13-and-under.
