OREM, Utah — Utah Valley scored a goal apiece late in each half, lifting the Wolverine women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting Cal Poly on a 95-degree Friday evening at Clyde Field, the Mustangs' third of four straight road matches to open the season.
Cal Poly senior goalkeeper Sophia Brown turned away Julianna Carter with a 12th-minute save of a low, centered shot, before Monserrat Hernandez Marquez took the first shot of the night for the Mustangs (0-2-1), but her attempt angled wide in the 36th minute.
Carter, however, would return to produce the difference prior to intermission in the 38th minute, when she broke free into the box for a 1-v-1 opportunity with Brown. Brown dove in front to block Carter's first shot, but Carter maneuvered to secure the rebound and was able to convert with a put-back into the open net.
Mustang senior Jessica Johnson tested the Wolverines with a 73rd-minute attempt, but Allie Jara was in position for the save. Only four minutes later, Johnson almost tallied her ninth career goal on the receiving end of a lob sent into the box, but her header sailed just to the left of the near post.
UVU (1-2-0) added the insurance goal stemming from a corner kick with just under two-and-a-half minutes remaining to regulation full-time, when Amber Tripp navigated into the penalty area and slid a short pass to Breanna DeWaal for a shot beyond the keeper's reach from point-blank range.
Cal Poly's Jordan Patane attempted one last shot with just under a minute to play from the left side of the box, but Jara snagged the ball out of the air to tack on one more save.
Brown also came up with the save on a 63rd-minute shot by Heather Stainbrook, upping her career total to 284.
Cal Poly next heads to Salt Lake City to take on Utah on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Mountain Time at Ute Field, broadcast via Pac-12 Live Stream.
