SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Cal Poly tallied an equalizer early in the second half Sunday during its second game of a season-opening road trip, but the Sacramento State women's soccer team regained the lead and then tacked on an insurance goal to pick up a 3-1 victory at Hornet Soccer Field.
Freshman Camille Lafaix had the first chance of the match for the Mustangs in the fourth minute, but her attempt was deflected out, leading to a corner kick. From the ensuing corner, sophomore Megan Hansen tested Hornet keeper Aaliyah Fesili with the afternoon's first shot-on-goal (6'), but Fesili was able to step in front to stave off the threat.
The Hornets moved in front in the 34th minute, when Samantha Craig capitalized on a short pass from Kylee Kim-Bustillos, aiming into the left side of the net. (It was Kim-Bustillos' second contribution to the scoreboard during this week, as she netted the Hornet goal at UC Davis on Friday in the opening minute of a 3-1 loss.)
Fesili came up with another save in the 38th, preventing freshman Annette Greenley from tallying with a shot to the bottom-right corner. Cal Poly's Ava Dorvillier kept the Hornets from doubling their lead in the 43rd minute by sending back Tiffany Miras, and added back-to-back saves against Craig (47') & Ariana Nino (49') early in the second half.
The Mustangs leveled the game in the 54th minute, thanks to sophomore Brooke Oleson, assisted by freshman Nikki Trucco. The sequence began with a cross in from the right side of the box, before Oleson converted to the lower-right corner.
Trucco then almost scored herself in the 56th, but her attempt sailed over the crossbar.
Sacramento State (1-1-0), however, seized back the upper hand in the 66th minute via Shantel Torres-Benito, who finished from only 5 yards away following a tap from Nino after Aubrey Goodwill delivered a free kick from outside the box.
Kim-Bustillos then gave herself an opening-week total of two goals & an assist in the 72nd minute, putting away a cross from Erika Muñoz with a shot over the keeper to make it 3-1.
Grace Park (74'; high) had a look at cutting into the Sacramento State lead, before two teammates also almost scored late for the Mustangs (0-1-1). Olivia Ortiz (79') placed a shot to the bottom-center of the goal 10 minutes before Monserrat Hernandez Marquez (89') also shot on target, with a strike to the lower-left, but in each instance, Fesili was in position to come up with saves.
Cal Poly, which fell despite a 7-1 edge in corners for the day, continues its road stretch in the week ahead by traveling to Utah. The Mustangs will first visit Utah Valley in Orem at 5 p.m. Mountain Time Friday at Clyde Field, before heading to Salt Lake City to take on Utah at 1 p.m. MDT Sunday, Sept. 1 at Ute Field.
