SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman Benny Martinez earned his first fall as a Mustang, but Fresno State won the remaining nine bouts, two via fall, en route to a 41-6 victory over Cal Poly in a dual wrestling meet Saturday night in the Recreation Center.
Trailing 4-0 in the first period, Martinez (pictured at right) scored a reversal. The Eastlake, Calif., native then earned a takedown in the second period to tie the match at 4-4 and quickly pinned Robert Garcia IV in 4 minutes, 16 seconds, for the win.
It was the ninth win of the season for Martinez, a graduate of Eastake High School.
AJ Nevills at 285 pounds and Gary Joint at 133 both won by fall for Fresno State, wrestling at Cal Poly for the first time since February 2005. The Bulldogs dropped wrestling for 11 seasons, bringing the sport back to the campus for the 2017-18 campaign.
Fresno State won the first six bouts, capped by Nevills' fall, for a 25-0 lead and never looked back, improving to 9-6 on the year. Cal Poly fell to 0-6.

In the feature bout matching a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 13 Josh Hokit of Fresno State earned a 7-2 decision over Cal Poly's Tom Lane, ranked No. 17.
Hokit scored a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second period and two more takedowns in the final period, giving up just a pair of escapes, for the victory, improving to 18-3 on the year. Lane, who had won eight of his last nine bouts, fell to 16-9.
