PULLMAN, Wash. — Facing its second ranked Pac-12 opponent on the road in four days, the Cal Poly women's soccer team fell at unbeaten No. 16 Washington State on Sunday, 4-1 at Lower Soccer Field, continuing a five-game road stretch.
Washington State (7-0-0) took the lead in the third minute when Mak Gomera-Stevens set up Brianna Alger with a cross delivered to point-blank range, where she capitalized with a back-heel tap only a couple feet away from the right post.
The Cougars quickly doubled the lead (7'), as Sydney Pulver fed a through-ball to Morgan Weaver, who scored with a shot into the right side of the net.
Mustang senior Ashley Kirchick almost answered on the possession following the restart, but her seventh-minute attempt sailed wide.
Also in the opening half for Cal Poly (0-6-3), sophomore Georgina Stiegeler saw a 10th-minute shot arc wide, before freshman Brooke Rubinstein had a look blocked (19') by the WSU back line.
WSU then went up 3-0 in the 37th minute, thanks to another shot inside the right post via Alysha Overland, assisted by Molly Myers on a give-and-go combination upfield.
Cal Poly got on the board in the 53rd minute, when sophomore Grace Park settled a pass from Kirchick before launching a strike beyond the outstretched reach of Cougar keeper Emma Dahline from 25 yards away.
The Cougars tacked on the final margin upon a 64th-minute free-kick opportunity, as Maddy Haro angled a pass to Weaver, who recorded a brace by aiming inside the far post from the right side of the penalty area. It was Weaver's 20th career goal, No. 8 all-time at WSU.
Kelly Kessloff (67') shot wide shortly after, before one final attempt by Chelsea Barry sailed high with less than two minutes remaining to full time, as the Cougars didn't concede again.
Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Sophia Brown faced 26 shots altogether, making nine saves, upping her career total to 214, No. 4 in school history.
The Mustangs travel to take on one more Top 25 foe during non-conference play, visiting No. 7 Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. Friday, before returning home to host Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Part of Week of Welcome around campus, Sept. 23 vs. the Lancers (first-year members of the WAC) is a Youth Day at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, with free admission for kids 13-and-under.
