Cal Poly Finishes Fourth in Big West Women's Golf Championship

IRVINE, Calif. – Four rounds in the 70s were not enough for Cal Poly to catch Long Beach State in the final round of the 2018 Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship on Tuesday at Strawberry Farms.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs, defending conference champions, posted a four-person 301 total on the 6,038-yard, par-71 course but no one was going to catch the 49ers, who carded a 290 aggregate, the best team score of the day, en route to a 10-stroke victory over UC Davis.
Long Beach State finished with a three-day 27-over-par 879 total while UC Davis posted an 889 aggregate. UC Irvine was third at 897, five shots ahead of the fourth-place Mustangs.
Cal Poly's top finisher was Caroline Cantlay (pictured above with Cal Poly Senior Woman Administrator Barbara Martinez) as she placed 11th with rounds of 72, 77 and 75 for a 224 total on her way to Big West Freshman of the Year honors.
Sophie Bergland shared 12th place with three other golfers at 225, Bergland finishing with a 76, while Jamie Harada also earned a top-20 finish with a final-round 77 for a 229 total and 20th place.
Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Desiree Gillaspy, 22nd with a 230 total following a final-round 73, and Mallory Muehlbauer with an 88 for a 245 total and 39th place.
Conference medalist honors went to Jennifer Yu of Long Beach State with an even-par 213 total after carding a final-round 69 for the wire-to-wire win. The 49er won by three strokes over Janet Yeo of UC Irvine while Tyra Tonkham of Hawaii, who recorded the day's best round, a 68, shared third place with Avery French of UC Irvine.
Cantlay and Gillaspy earned second-team all-Big West honors.
Long Beach State captured its first Big West Conference title since 2009. With the team title, the 49ers advance to the NCAA Division I women's regionals which will be held at Stanford,Calif., Tallahassee, Fla., Austin, Tex., and Madison, Wisc., May 7-9. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships will be hosted May 17-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
