
Cal Poly Slips to Eighth-Place Finish in Anuenue Spring Break Classic

KAPALUA, Hawaii – The Cal Poly women's golf team, which averaged 304 strokes over the first two rounds of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic, carded a 304 in Wednesday's final round and still dropped two spots to an eighth-place finish.
On The Bay Course at Kapalua Resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs finished with a 54-hole 48-over-par 912 aggregate.
Louisville and Hawaii both finished with 15-over-par 879 totals and the Cardinals were declared team champions by virtue of NCAA Championship tiebreaker rules. Louisville posted a 298 total Wednesday while Hawaii finished at 300.
UC Davis edged Long Beach State 889-891 for third place and Oregon State rounded out the top five in the 13-team field with an 896 total.
Individual champion was Kaci Masuda of Hawaii with a final-round 70 for a four-under-par 212 total and a three-shot victory over Lauren Hartlage of Louisville. Hartlage was the second-round leader but carded a 75 Wednesday.
Avery French of UC Irvine and Kristin Le of Santa Clara shared third place with 217 totals.
Cal Poly's top finishers were Caroline Cantlay and Sophie Bergland as they shared 26th place with four other golfers at nine-over-par 225. Cantlay carded a final-round 77 and Bergland a 76.
Desiree Gillaspy (pictured above) shared 36th place with Justine Lauer of Utah Valley with 227 totals, Gillaspy posting a 74.
Other scoring golfers for Cal Poly were Jamie Harada with an 83 for a 241 total and 62nd place, and Mallory Muehlbauer with a 77 for a 243 aggregate and 64th place.
Bergland and Gillaspy shared eighth place in par-3 scoring at two over par while Gillaspy also was third in par-5 scoring at four under par. Cantlay was 10th in par-4 scoring at three over par.
With her hole-in-one Monday, Bergland was one of just two golfers in the field to card an eagle. Cantlay's nine birdies were No. 8 and Gillaspy and Bergland totaled 34 pars, 16th in the field of 69 golfers.
Cal Poly defends its Big West Conference championship April 15-17 at the Strawberry Farms Golf Course in Irvine.
